Often some of the finest success stories are born out of small hobbies,
which in turn are born out of somebody’s kitchen somewhere in the great
wide world. This particular kitchen happened to be located in Tiburon,
California, and the hobby happened to be decoupage.
And the lady wielding the scissors and glue was Annie Modica. Now,
Modica’s nationally-acclaimed studio has some pretty big clients under
its wing, including the famous American luxury department store, Saks
What Annie and her twelve-person team manage to do is something
extraordinary: create decoupage homewares that are exceptionally
creative and flawless. For example, each raw wooden piece is adorned in a
design, cut and glued by hand, and lacquered in a special room known as
“the hole”. Here, the temperature is maintained at 28.7 degrees
Celsius, and the environment is kept free of any hair or particles that
might stick to the resin, assuring that each piece is smooth and pure.
This overall process takes about two weeks to accomplish, and ensures
that your Annie Modica piece is different from all others.
Lovers of old-world letter writing and romanticism will in turn love the Stamps tray. It isn’t just a functional
piece: it’s also art. Sealed beneath thick, glossy resin, it’s protected
from water, and its colour is made more intense. This hand-painted tray
is ideal for serving cocktails, and is sure to tie the room together in
an impressive way!
