Galway. Cathair na dTreabh
– “City of Tribes.”
The mere name sounds like the stuff of legends, conjuring images of
mist-veiled lakes and bays, overseen by medieval tribes, merchants,
kings and gentry. And it is also the heartland of Galway Crystal, who
have long been one of Ireland's most beloved lead crystal crafters.
Located on the shores of Galway Bay, Galway Crystal’s craftsmanship is
based on its long history with the land’s rich and diverse heritage,
while their designs are based on the scenic hinterland and the rich
folklore of the City of Tribes. Galway Crystal is solid, and beautiful
in its strength.
There's something almost medieval about the Kells collection of glassware… Perhaps it's the name, which is borrowed from an elaborately decorated Celtic manuscript from the 8th Century, which is reflected in the ornate cuts of the crystal. The deep shape of the bowl widens from a solid stem, set upon fluted feet, for a wine goblet that is robust in the hand.
