Waterford. The name stands out, as clear as the beautiful crystal for which it is known.
In 1783, two brothers started a little crystal factory in Waterford, one of Ireland’s busiest ports. Before long, ships began to sail all over the world, laden with beautiful Waterford crystal. Over the years, the Waterford name became synonymous with immaculate quality and exquisite design, and today Waterford Crystal is widely recognised as among the best the world has to offer.
Every year, the House of Waterford Crystal lets its designers run wild, allowing them the artistic freedom to select a theme of their own and design a collection of pieces around that theme. The theme for 2014’s Designer Studio Collection is one that’s close to Waterford’s heart – Sea Life.
The work of designer Billy Briggs, the Atlantic Herring Platter is a triumph – surely one of Waterford’s most majestic pieces yet. Designed and crafted at the House of Waterford Crystal, this limited edition piece draws its inspiration from the bones of the Atlantic Herring, with a fish outline at the centre of the platter with diagonal cuts radiating outward from a central line. Not only does it resemble the skeleton of a fish, it’s also a clever play on the traditional herringbone pattern.
Don’t let this once-in-a-lifetime piece become the one that gets away…
