You may be familiar with the art of cutting and pasting on your computer. It’s a skill that requires precision, accuracy and attention to detail.
But long before computers, there was the art of découpage…
Derived from the French word découper, which means “to cut out,” this traditional method of art has been practiced for centuries by the Japanese, Chinese, Persians and Europeans. By applying this method, everyday household objects can be transformed into decorative works of art by the simple act of cutting and pasting pretty images to flat surfaces. Each layer is sealed with multiple coats of varnish until the images appear like they're actually painted on to the object.
Now, the creative force behind Whitelaw and Newton, Lindy Newton, is breathing new life in to the art of découpage with her stunning range of handcrafted trays. Made from lacquered wood, each tray in the collection features a charming image from different corners of the globe that will certainly bring some vintage appeal to your next afternoon tea or cocktail soiree.
