During the Thirteenth, Fourteenth and Fifteenth Centuries, Seki City was
home to over three hundred swordsmiths, amateurs and masters alike. Two
men in particular – Kanemoto Magoroku and Saburo Shizu – made the city
famous for its swords, and it became the country’s centre for reputable
swordmaking. Fast-forward to modern times, and Seki continues to make
cutlery and edged tools not just for Japan, but international markets as
well. Nowadays, it is known as “the Knife Capital of Japan.”
