Video: The Tastes of Turkey with Somer Sivrioglu

Nearly a week has passed, but we’re still daydreaming about the delicious dishes chef Somer Sivrioglu prepared for us last Saturday when he took over the Peter’s Demonstration Kitchen for what was one of our best events yet.

This was Somer’s second visit to Peter’s (click here to take a look at the video from Somer’s first time in out kitchen) so we knew our tastebuds were in for a treat. Naturally, Somer didn’t disappoint…

Born and raised in Istanbul, Somer’s passion for food was influenced by his mother, a chef and restaurateur. Somer arrived in Sydney in 1995, aged 25, bringing with him a love of urban Turkish cuisine and culture, as well as a culinary vision he was determined to make a reality.

Since then, Somer’s award-winning Balmain restaurant, Efendy, has gone from strength to strength. His newest venture, Anason Meze Bar at Barangaroo opened its doors earlier this year. Then, there’s Somer’s first book, Anatolia – Adventures in Turkish Cooking, which has picked up a heap of awards and nominations. Somer’s co-author, journalist David Dale, has hailed Somer as ‘the next Ottolenghi’. Once you’ve seen Somer in action, you’ll understand why.

At Saturday’s event, Somer cooked some of his favourite Turkish meals for us, including Atom, Imam Bayildi, Gavurdagi, Sleeping Figs – and finally, chocolate and almond medjool dates. Watch him at work in the video above, or click here to take a look at our photos if you’re craving more!

As always, our thanks to everyone who came along. We hope you all had as much fun as we did. And, of course, thanks to superchef Somer! Maybe one day soon, we’ll stop daydreaming about those chocolate dates? But not today…
